Training Period - It takes 12 months for anyone under 18 to get a license.
Your child wants to obtain a drivers license ASAP and with the least amount of effort. Your part of the process is to
observe a minimum of 50 hours (10 at night) of their driving over a years time. Once the teen has a Drivers License
that isn't the end of it. The state's Point System for drivers is very restrictive for 15-18 year olds.
The maximum amount of points assessed is 7 for that period. A high percentage of teens have their license suspended
during this period because of this. Just because the teen has a license dosen't mean supervision should stop. HELPFULL HINTS:
Establish a Parent/teen contract. Ideas are
on the Web. The purpose of this is to have a framework established BEFORE something happens so responsibilities and
consequences are clearly defined.
Buy a steering wheel lock (Club) for their car to enforce
any or all movements. With a car their schoolwork may suffer. Weekend nights are very high accident rates for
teens.
Once they get a license continue to ride with them on a weekly basis at first then monthly
till 18 years old. The reason is a driver reaches a "plateau" and may develop bad habits or lax attitude.
Hopefully this will keep them responsible and alive. Your auto insurance rates should reflect this.
Incentives
- If your teen reaches their 18th Birthday without points or an accident a bonus could be awarded. The money needed is
funded by the lower risk premiums for auto insurance.
